(This project is canceled as of 2/16/2011 until further notice)

My Mission:

Raise enough funds to complete 4-8 weeks of volunteer work on the northern border of Thailand before the end of the 2011 year. Gain support for those suffering across Thailand’s northern border.

My Goal:

To help, inspire, and better the lives of suffering individuals, while developing a social network of friendship, resources, and encouragement in the local community. Partner up with groups or organizations that are willing to help be a source of acceptance and inspiration for all people.

What will be accomplished In Thailand:

I will be in a supportive role assisting as directed, helping Burmese refugees, rural Thai communities, and hill tribe people. Education is of great importance and will be a key focus. Teaching English as a second language will give children opportunities for a better life. Instruction on preventative health issues, like fighting malaria, tuberculosis, dengue, HIV/AIDS, and avian/pandemic influenza will be covered; agricultural training will be implemented and will help create healthy sustainable development. There is a lot to be achieved in a variety of ways.

Why Thailand needs help:

Social Injustices/ Human rights- The world's longest running civil war is in Burma, the military rule is responsible for significant crimes against ethnic minorities. The first mass exodus of 10,000 refugees arrived in Thailand in 1984, causing a great need for camps to be established along the 1,240-mile border, giving shelter to about 150,000 individuals, according to the Thailand-Burma Border Consortium.  On May 2, 2008 Cyclone Nargis, the worst natural disaster in the recorded history of Burma (officially known as Myanmar) brought more than 100,000 fatalities; leaving 55,000 people missing. Tens of thousands have crossed the border into Thailand hoping for a better life only to end up hopelessly in refugee camps.

In Burma, more than one million farmers and their children have had their homes and villages destroyed. Many are hungry, sick and in hiding. Forced labor, human trafficking, and child labor are rampant. The military is also notorious for rampant use of sexual violence as an instrument of control, including allegations of systematic rapes and taking of sex slaves as porters for the military. A strong women's pro-democracy movement has formed in exile, largely along the Thai border and in Chiang Mai.

I ask for your support.
